In Which LadiezHJ Creates the Next Great American Story

Happy 95th Birthday, Ms. Beverly Cleary! You made rainy days, boring family trips and reading-for-pleasure way too much fun. You have written amazing books inspired by real-life girls, made kid’s books fun AND funny and even threw a wrench into many of the literary tropes expected in 1960s YAF. If we were still in 4th grade, we would probably name a hamster after you, bring it to show and tell and let no one pet it!  OK so we still might do the hamster thing.

Beverly Cleary Birthday

Ms. Cleary, in honor of your birthday, we’d like to direct everyone’s attention to our own literary endeavors: using our imaginations. These are some children’s book ideas we’ve pulled together totally off the top of our head. Now…prepare to be swept off into a fantasy land of literary wonder and excitement, as we paint worlds of words with our flights of imaginative fancyyyyyyyy:

Book Idea #1 - Bathilda, is the story of a young Asian girl forced to fend for herself in a world where her parents, brother and evil principal believe that she is nothing more than a useless, common idiot. However, the opposite is true. In fact, Bathilda is a genius. With the help of her friends and her kind teacher Ms. Bunny, Bathilda harnesses the power of her mind. And by harness, we mean MOVE STUFF WITH HER MIND!

Book Idea #2 - The Wiccan of Az, is the story of a young orphan girl named Smorthy from a small town in Minnesota. One day a cyclone rips through her family farm, sending her to a magical land filled with short people and really crazy, bright colors. Wearing red high tops, she’s told to follow the yellow painted bike path to meet the Wiccan who can help her get home. Joined by a scarecrow, a tin man and a panther, Smorthy must make it home before the Broadway show Wicked starts. Doors open at 8pm.

Book Idea #3 - Untitled (TBD!) This is the story of a young girl who chose to raise the runt of the pig litter as her own pet. She named it Pilbur and fell in love with it immediately. But one day, her father told the girl that he was going to have to take Pilbur to market. Pilbur and his spider friend, Charles, overheard this and developed a plan to save Pilbur’s life. Unfortunately, the plan, which involved superlatives spun into webs, didn’t work. The girl is now a vegetarian and her best friend loves bacon.
